Flag of the Republic of the Congo

The flag of the Republic of the Congo has a yellow diagonal band running from the lower hoist to the upper fly, dividing the field into a green triangle at the upper hoist and a red triangle at the lower fly. The Pan-African colours are read as green for the country's forests and agricultural wealth, yellow for friendship and nobility, and red for the struggle for independence.

Originally hoisted on 18 August 1959 under the autonomous republic within the French Community, the flag was dropped in 1970 when Marxist-Leninists renamed the country the People's Republic of the Congo and adopted a red flag with a hammer, hoe and star. The tricolour was restored on 10 June 1991 with the return to multiparty politics.
