The flag of Costa Rica consists of five horizontal bands in blue, white, red, white, and blue, with the central red band twice the width of the others. The state flag, used by government authorities, places the national coat of arms in a white oval on the red band toward the hoist, while the civil flag omits the emblem. It was designed by Pacifica Fernandez, wife of President Jose Maria Castro Madriz, and adopted on 27 November 1848.
Inspired by the French tricolour after the 1848 revolutions in Europe, the red band was added to the earlier blue and white pattern to signal Costa Rica's embrace of republican values. Blue represents the sky and idealism, white stands for peace and wisdom, and red for warmth and the blood of patriots.
