Italy's Tricolore features three vertical stripes of green, white, and red. The oldest documented mention dates to 1796 during Napoleon's Italian campaign. The flag became a symbol of Italian unification throughout the 1800s, becoming the national flag when Italy unified on 17 March 1861.
Following the 1946 referendum that ended the monarchy, royal symbols were removed, leaving the pure tricolour enshrined in Article 12 of the Constitution. Green represents the nation's landscapes and hope, white symbolizes the snow of the Alps and ideals of purity, and red reflects the blood shed during Italy's wars of independence and unification.
