Flag of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia adopted its flag on 30 November 1978, when the four constituent states ratified the constitution that formed the federation. Independence from the US-administered Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands followed in 1986 under the Compact of Free Association, and the flag was retained.
The design has a light blue field bearing four white five-pointed stars arranged in a diamond. The four stars represent the four federated states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The light blue is deliberately similar to the United Nations colour, acknowledging the Trust Territory's earlier UN administration, and the layout directly derives from the Trust Territory's own flag, which had six stars. The design reflects Micronesia's status as an island federation spread across more than two thousand kilometres of ocean.
