The flag of Suriname features five horizontal bands of green, white, red, white, and green, with the central red band at double width and a yellow five-pointed star at the centre. It was adopted on 25 November 1975, the day the country became independent from the Netherlands, and was the winning entry of a national design contest by Jacques Herman Pinas.
Green honours the fertile land and dense forests of the country, white represents peace and justice, red stands for progress and love of nation, and the golden star symbolises unity among Suriname's ethnic communities and a bright future. Its five points are often said to stand for the major population groups, indigenous, Creole, Maroon, South Asian, Javanese, and Chinese, that make up the country.
